Every so often, when I whip up a dish and spot those few scraps left on the plates, my mind wonders if the crowd truly enjoyed their meal. It's not always easy to decipher through comments or silence alone. Conversely, when I'm on the tasting end of things, if I encounter food that's not to my liking, I choose not to point out culinary imperfections. Criticism can wound the heart and embarrass those who've tirelessly prepped. It's the story of a cook who found herself more adept at menus on paper than in the kitchen! Regrettably, she left us last spring,


and it's tough to speak ill of her cooking skills, but she really struggled. Her pasta Invariably overdone. A baby wouldn't need any warning about swallowing without chewing. Six-hour roasted chicken at regular oven temperatures was the norm. Her cabbage stew always came with a puddle on the plate! And rice Closer to lumpy potato mash than grains. Some friends can't claim culinary prowess, and they're quick to ask for tips. Our circle knows who's masterful in the kitchen, and when less skilled chefs arise, support steps in. When approached about a dish's quality, I tend to hint through actions, letting untouched plates or food speak for me.
