Mara leaned back in her chair and watched the cursor blink on the shared document. “Do you ever think about how many drafts never get read?” she asked.
Luis glanced up from his notebook. “You mean the ideas that stay in the margins?” he said. “Those are my favorite ones. They feel like secret versions of what might have been.”
She smiled. “I found an old notebook from the first year we worked together. Half the pages are just scribbles, arrows, and little boxes that mean nothing now.”
“They meant something then,” Luis replied. “They got you to the next version. That counts.” He turned his pen between his fingers, thinking. “Do you remember the project with the color cards?”
Mara laughed. “The one where we spread everything on the floor and almost lost the room key under the piles I remember.”
Luis nodded. “We stayed until the building lights dimmed, and the custodian asked if we needed a flashlight to find the exit.”
“The best part,” Mara said, “was that the final result looked nothing like those floor layouts, but somehow they guided us there anyway.”
He leaned back, listening to the hum of the air system. “Maybe the drafts are just a way of walking around the idea until it feels familiar enough to share.”
Mara watched the cursor blink again, then began to type, letting the next version take shape.

“Do you think they will notice the new plant in the corner?” Jae asked as he straightened a stack of folders on the meeting table.
Nora looked up from her tablet and tilted her head toward the windowsill. “The tall one with the wide leaves It looks like it has been here longer than we have,” she replied. “Where did you even find it?”
“At the community center,” Jae said. “They were rearranging the lobby and said this one needed a quieter spot. I thought the conference room could use a little more green.”
Nora smiled. “It makes the room feel less like a box,” she said. “Do you remember our first planning session, when we met in that tiny room with no windows?”
Jae laughed. “We kept checking the clock because it felt like time wasn’t moving. We had sticky notes covering the walls and one marker that kept running dry in the middle of every sentence.”
“Now we have natural light, working pens, and apparently a plant,” Nora said. She closed her tablet for a moment. “What do you think people need most from us this season?”
“Clear directions,” Jae answered without hesitating. “Not more noise, just simple steps that are easy to follow. They already have a lot on their minds.”
Nora nodded. “Then that’s what we focus on in the next round of materials. Less decoration, more clarity.”
Outside the room, footsteps passed in the hallway, followed by the soft murmur of conversations starting and ending. Jae adjusted one of the chairs so it faced the door.
“Ready for the next group?” he asked.
“Almost,” Nora said, glancing at the plant again. “Let’s make sure they can see the path from the moment they sit down.”
The door opened, and the room settled into a calm, expectant quiet as the next discussion began.
