Thanks for asking about the garden project. I ended up going with raised beds this year instead of in-ground plots. The soil in our backyard is just too compacted and rocky to work with easily. I built three beds, each about four by eight feet, using untreated cedar planks. They look really nice and should hold up for several seasons. I filled them with a mix of topsoil, compost, and vermiculite so the drainage should be solid. I planted tomatoes, peppers, cucumbers, and basil in the first bed. The second bed has carrots, radishes, and lettuce. The third bed I reserved for squash and zucchini. I also put in a few strawberry plants along the edges just to see how they do. I have been watering every morning before the sun gets too high. So far everything is sprouting well and I haven't seen any pests yet. I might add a drip irrigation system later this summer if I can find the time to set it up. Let me know if you want to come by and see it sometime.

AAA Roadside Support • Program for Eligible Residents

I wanted to follow up on your question about the community center volunteer schedule. I checked with the coordinator and the evening shifts on Tuesdays and Thursdays are still open if you are interested. They usually need two people for the front desk from five to eight. The main responsibilities include greeting visitors, answering basic questions about programs, and directing people to the right rooms. They also ask volunteers to help tidy up the lobby area before locking up. I have been doing this for about three months now and it is pretty straightforward. The staff are friendly and they give you a quick orientation before your first shift. You can sign up for as many or as few shifts as you want each week. There is also a parking lot right behind the building so getting there is easy. Let me know if you want me to send you the link to the sign-up page. I think you would enjoy it since you mentioned wanting to get more involved in the neighborhood.
