Walmart Points Expiring

Hey, just wanted to loop back on what you asked about the community garden. I finally got a chance to visit the one on Oak Street and honestly it was much bigger than I expected. They have about thirty raised beds and a really nice shed where they store tools. A few of the members invited me to help with the weekend watering rotation. I said I'd try it out next Saturday morning. The soil there looks really healthy too — dark and crumbly, not at all like the clay we have in our yard. One of the older guys showed me how they layer their compost and it made me think we could probably improve our own setup pretty easily. He said the key is balancing greens and browns and keeping the pile moist but not soggy. I took a few notes and might actually build a small bin behind the garage. Let me know if you want to come check it out with me sometime. I think you would enjoy seeing how organized everything is.

Oh and about that podcast you mentioned last week — I finally listened to the episode you recommended. The one about urban beekeeping and how rooftop hives are making a comeback in the city. I actually thought it would be drier than it was but they interviewed a woman who keeps three hives on a coffee shop roof downtown and she had some really practical insights. She said the bees actually thrive in cities because there are more diverse flowering plants across parks and gardens compared to monoculture farmland. I never really thought about it that way. I also learned that a single worker bee visits up to two thousand flowers in one day which sounds exhausting but also kind of inspiring. Now I keep looking at the maple tree in my backyard differently wondering if a hive could fit there. Probably not this year but maybe next spring I will look into it more seriously. Let me know if you come across any other episodes like that. I am starting to enjoy learning about small scale food systems.
