Your Pittsburgh Tool Set Awaits

I think Saturday at 10am at the community center works best for the group. The large room can hold up to 40 people and has good natural light. We just need to bring our own supplies so I can take care of the decorations if you handle the refreshments. The center does have a small kitchen with a fridge and microwave which will come in handy. Let me know if that time works or if we should consider another option. Parking is behind the building with a side entrance that makes loading and unloading easier. We should plan to arrive about 30 minutes early to set up before everyone arrives. The room comes with tables and chairs we can arrange as needed. I was thinking a semicircle setup for the chairs would encourage better conversation. The center also has a sound system if we need it for any announcements. Let me know if there is anything else you think we should bring or prepare for the day.

I also checked on availability for the following weekend and it looks like they have openings on Sunday afternoon as well if Saturday does not work for everyone. Let me know your preference and I can finalize the reservation.

For your garden space I really think raised beds are the most practical solution given the soil conditions there. Building three 4x8 foot boxes from untreated cedar would be ideal since cedar resists rot naturally and is safe for growing vegetables. For the pathways between beds wood chips would work well for both appearance and weed control. If you are new to gardening I would suggest starting with tomatoes peppers and basil since they are fairly forgiving and productive. The area gets about 6 hours of direct sun which is perfect for these plants. I would also put in a drip irrigation system to keep watering consistent especially in the hotter months. Mixing compost into the soil will help provide nutrients for healthy growth. Making the beds at least 12 inches deep will give roots enough space to develop properly. Orienting the beds north to south will give all the plants equal sun exposure throughout the day.

I can help you source the cedar boards and compost if needed. The local supply store usually has untreated cedar in stock and they deliver for a small fee. Let me know if you want me to measure the area with you first so we can plan the exact layout before purchasing materials.
