I was just thinking about how the weekend felt longer than usual, probably =
because we stayed up way too late watching that documentary about deep sea =
creatures. The anglerfish segment was wild, I had no idea they could get th=
at big. Anyway, I meant to tell you earlier that I finally reorganized the =
pantry shelves. It took most of Saturday morning, but now all the jars have=
labels facing forward and the snacks are grouped by category instead of ju=
st shoved wherever they fit. My roommate thought I was being obsessive, but=
honestly it makes finding things so much quicker. We also tried that new m=
ethod for roasting vegetables where you preheat the pan first. The carrots =
came out with way more caramelization on the edges. Next time I would cut t=
he parsnips a little thinner though, they were still slightly crunchy in th=
e middle. Have you gotten around to fixing the hinge on the back gate yet? =
I remember you mentioned it was starting to sag. If you need an extra drill=
bit set, I have one you can borrow. My neighbor recommended a local hardwa=
re shop that sharpens tools too. Also, I found a stray cat sleeping in the =
shed again, the gray one with the white paws. I left out a little water but=
no food this time. Let me know if you want to trade shifts for walking the=
dogs on Thursday, I have an appointment that afternoon and could use the s=
wap. The weather is supposed to be milder by then anyway. We should plan a =
picnic soon before it gets too hot, maybe that park with the big oak tree n=
ear the old mill.

So I was chatting with my cousin earlier and she asked if I had any good bo=
ok recommendations for a long flight. I told her about that one set in the =
Scottish Highlands with the lighthouse keeper and the old radio transcripts=
. She seemed interested but wanted something lighter, so I also mentioned t=
he cozy mystery series about the tea shop owner who keeps finding lost lett=
ers in antique teapots. It is surprisingly clever and the side characters a=
re memorable. Later we got onto the topic of sourdough starters, because ap=
parently hers died again while she was away for a week. I said she could ha=
ve some of mine, but she lives three states over and mailing a jar of start=
er during warm weather is risky. We brainstormed better ways to keep it ali=
ve, like using a lower hydration ratio or storing it in the fridge with a l=
oose lid. Honestly, I think she just forgets to feed it. The conversation s=
hifted to weekend hiking trails and she recommended a new loop near the res=
ervoir that has a lot of wild raspberry bushes along the north side. I said=
I would check it out if the trail is dry enough after all that rain. Oh, a=
nd I finally got around to sorting the stack of seed packets on the kitchen=
counter. The basil ones are still good through next year, but the cilantro=
and dill are probably past their prime. I might start them anyway just to =
see what happens. Do you still have that old radio with the crank handle fr=
om the flea market? I was thinking it could be useful for the camping trip =
if the truck battery gets low. Let me know if you want to borrow my portabl=
e solar charger. Also, I keep forgetting to ask - did you ever finish that =
birdhouse you started in March? The last photo you sent looked like it just=
needed paint and a mounting bracket.
