Hey, I finally got around to trying that fermentation thing you mentioned l=
ast month. I picked up a few wide-mouth jars from the cabinet, washed them =
out with warm water, and started with some sliced cucumbers and a basic sal=
t brine. Honestly I wasn't sure it would work because my kitchen tends to s=
tay pretty warm in the afternoons, but after three days on the counter they=
started smelling exactly like the ones from the deli counter. The garlic c=
loves turned a little blue which caught me off guard, but apparently that's=
a normal reaction with certain compounds. I was going to toss the first ba=
tch out of caution, but then I remembered you said to trust the smell and t=
he texture more than the color. The second jar had a tiny bit of white sedi=
ment at the bottom, nothing fuzzy, just cloudy, so I think that one will be=
even better if I let it go another day. Next weekend I want to try leftove=
r onion peels and some mustard seeds because I saw a video where they used =
the skins for extra color. Anyway, just wanted to share that small update a=
nd say thanks for the earlier guidance. It made the whole attempt less inti=
midating than I expected.

I went on a long walk after work today and ended up down by the old rail tr=
ail where the blackberries grow wild. It wasn't planned at all, but the hum=
idity finally broke so the air felt lighter and the trail wasn't crowded. I=
picked a handful into my jacket pocket and they got a little crushed on th=
e way back, but they still tasted fine. There's a wooden bench near the sec=
ond crossing where someone left a small painted rock with a simple wave pat=
tern on it, really weathered now. It's funny how little landmarks like that=
make a route feel more yours. I kept thinking about how different the same=
path looks in the fall when the sumac turns deep red. I might go back on S=
aturday morning if the forecast holds, probably bring a thermos of tea and =
just sit for a while without checking my phone. You know how rare it is to =
actually sit and not do anything else, not even a podcast. Hope your week s=
tayed quiet in a good way. If you ever want to take that trail together, I =
can show you the hidden entrance behind the community garden. No pressure, =
just thought it might be a nice change of scenery for both of us.

I finally cleared out the shelf by the window and found an old notebook I u=
sed during that drawing class ages ago. The cover is bent and the spiral is=
a little rusty, but most of the pages are still blank. Looking through the=
first few pages made me laugh because I kept writing notes like "shading i=
s hard" and "stop pressing so hard." It was from that winter when the studi=
o was always too cold and we'd all wrap up in big scarves while sketching. =
I think I might start filling the rest of it with plant observations or sim=
ple floor plans for the garden boxes. There's something satisfying about pa=
per that lays flat and doesn't buzz every few minutes. I also found a dried=
leaf pressed between two pages, completely flattened and papery but still =
holding its color. No idea what kind of tree it came from, maybe a birch or=
an aspen. Anyway, that whole shelf took about twenty minutes to sort and n=
ow the window gets more light. Small reorganizing jobs feel disproportionat=
ely rewarding sometimes. If you have any old sketchbooks lying around, you =
should flip through them. Could be a good little time capsule.
