Okay so I was thinking about the community garden project again. Let me walk through how the raised beds could be arranged along the south fence. We have roughly forty feet of usable space there, and if we keep each bed at four feet by eight feet, we can fit six beds comfortably with walking paths between them. For the paths I would suggest wood chips over landscape fabric to keep weeds manageable. The soil mix should be about sixty percent screened topsoil, thirty percent compost, and ten percent sand for drainage. We talked with the local nursery and they can deliver everything on a Tuesday morning which works for most volunteers. I also want to confirm the watering setup before we commit to anything. A drip irrigation line with a simple timer would make a big difference during July heat. Let me know if someone on the committee has experience installing those. The shed can stay where it is, but we might move the compost station closer to the back gate so nobody has to haul materials too far. I figure we can get all the building done in one weekend if we have enough drills and sawhorses. Also remember to ask about the herb spiral location near the toolshed. That spot gets good morning light but not too much afternoon sun. We should mark it with stakes this week before the ground gets too dry. I looked at the seed inventory from last spring and we still have plenty of lettuce, carrots, and bush beans. Maybe we add some pollinator flowers around the perimeter. Marigolds and zinnias are both easy from seed and the bees seem to love them. Let me know your schedule for the next few weeks and we can start gathering supplies. I can bring the wheelbarrow and a post hole digger from home. My neighbor also offered some old bricks if we want to edge the paths.
