07/05/2006: "Kenneth Lay (of Enron infamy) has died"

It's being reported in a number of online news outlets that Kenneth Lay has died suddenly of a massive heart attack. He had been found guilty of six counts of fraud and conspiracy and was awaiting sentencing.

You can read the (many) linked articles for more details, but I have a question: How in the world does a convicted felon get a vacation?
