04/28/2011: "Right Invasion"
For many years, many on the right (or at least those rallying behind the Republicans) have echoed behind the often quoted words of Ronald Reagan1:
The nine most dangerous words in the English language are "I'm from the government, and I'm here to help."
Anybody who has read more than a couple of posts in this blog will recognize that I whole heartedly agree with that sentiment.
However, many on the right, particularly in the USA, also support armed invasion of countries that, in many cases, don't pose any immediate threat to them (not currently invading or at war, etc). They seem to believe these interventions will be beneficial to those people, bringing peace, prosperity, and some of "the American dream".
In effect, they believe that the most welcome words those people could hope to hear are "I'm from the USA government, and I'm here to help."
Somehow they seem completely oblivious to how hypocritical this contradiction is.
[1] I have searched for a direct citation for this quote but have been unable to find any, only many people re-quoting it. Based on this, it wouldn't surprise me if the quote is completely apocryphal, or originally said by somebody else.
